To make your salmon fishing experience one to remember, we’ve put together a list of some useful tips and facts to help you fish for salmon in Scotland with success. Read on to learn more.

1. Prepare and check your equipment before you leave

Before you set off, be sure to do a check to make sure you have all the equipment you need to take with you. It’s handy to have everything set up and to have the bait prepared in advance so you can get straight to it without any delay – especially during prime time.

2. Time and plan wisely

Peak times to fish for salmon tend to be one hour before or after a high or low tide. Try to plan your fishing trip with caution around these peak times to increase your chances of success.

3. Take the weather into consideration

The weather plays an important part when it comes to a successful salmon fishing experience. Typically, gloomy days with overcast grey skies are the best to fish for salmon, as the fish prefer low lighting. Alternatively, in the summer months where it’s bright and hot, you should try to head out early at dusk or late at dawn for the best chances of catching salmon.

4. Use red or clear fishing line

Colour disappears the deeper it goes underwater, which is why the colour of your fishing line can make a huge difference when fishing. Red fishing line is the most effective as it is the first colour that disappears as light penetrates the water from as little as 15 feet. This, in turn, means the line will be invisible to fish at this level or deeper so the bait you attach to your line will appear more realistic and natural to attract the salmon.

Alternatively, a transparent clear line is also a popular choice, however, this may prove to be difficult for beginners to track and keep an eye on from above the water.

5. Adjust your angle to the speed of the water

Typically, the way to fish for salmon is to cast your line at a 45-degree angle and allow the line to swing below the water with your bait. This, however, is flexible dependant on the speed of the water, so give yourself some time to experiment and adjust. For fast-flowing water, try casting a shallower line for a sturdier grip and position, whereas if you experience a slow run of water, try casting at a wider angle to allow the line to move more freely.

6. Be patient

Patience is a must when it comes to fishing, especially if it’s your first time. Take time to prepare your gear, set up your position, read the water and take action accordingly. Learn what works well and adjust your technique to improve as you go on. Most of all, enjoy the experience.
