Throughout December we celebrate Scotland’s ancient Yuletide traditions within the hotel. Yule, or ‘Yogh’ in old Scots, was a winter festival celebrated in Scotland by pagans, druids and Viking ancestors who heavily influenced the folklore and culture of Scotland. Many of these activities are also the origins of Christmas traditions we still enjoy today, such as decorating our homes with candles and lights, bringing fresh foliage into our homes and gathering to feast with family.
This period of the Scottish calendar year is characterised by short days, long nights and colder temperatures, whilst awaiting the return of the Sun and new life in the New Year. We will be celebrating a range of traditions over this time and our full Yuletide programme will be launching soon.
