With Harper's Bazaar
Scotland and high fashion have long been a source of mutual fascination and inspiration. This November, The Fife Arms is delighted to co-host a very special Fashion Weekend with Harper’s Bazaar. Over one weekend, it will celebrate the creativity that Scotland and its landscape evoke as well as exploring the surprising connections between the village of Braemar, Harper’s Bazaar, and The Fife Arms.
Central to this story is Frances Farquharson a former Editor of Harper’s Bazaar (1939 – 1945) who married Captain Alwyne Farquharson, owner of Braemar Castle and Laird of Invercauld. A hugely fashionable figure in her day, Frances invited her many fashion friends to stay on their estate. One of these was the iconic Elsa Schiaparelli, the Italian-born fashion designer best known for her collaborations with the leading artists and surrealists such as Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dali. Her collaborations included outlandish pieces such as a hat in the shape of an upturned shoe and a dress with a large lobster painted on its skirt. It is in homage to Schiaparelli’s fascination with Braemar and its surroundings, that The Fife Arms’ cocktail bar is named Elsa’s.
Over the weekend, our programme of talks and our fashion room in The Fife Arms will celebrate these local and international connections while also exploring the wider connection between Scotland and fashion. Justine Picardie, renowned author and fashion expert, will discuss the links between fashion royalty such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, while Oriole Cullen Curator of Fashion and Modern Textiles at the V&A will provide a broader historical and cultural context in which these personalities existed. Christopher Kane, arguably Scotland’s most high profile fashion export, will provide a contemporary context to why his homeland remains a source of enduring fascination and influence. Textile designer Araminta Campbell will be joined by special guests to discuss the pivotal role of Scottish textiles in the fashion world.

Justine Picardie is a renowned fashion journalist and author. As Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country for over seven years she has been at the forefront of fashion and contemporary culture. Justine will be joined by Oriole Cullen, Curator of Modern Textiles and Fashion at the Victoria & Albert Museum to discuss the significant role played by Frances Farquharson in bringing haute couture to the highlands.

The Fife Arms
Araminta Campbell is a renowned textile designer who was born and raised in Aberdeenshire. In 2014 she set up her own design, studio where she works on her core range as well as a series of bespoke commissions such as the tweed and tartan she designed for the Fife Arms. Joining Araminta is Dr Mhairi Maxwell, Assistant Curator from V&A Dundee who worked on their current exhibition ‘Studio Nicholas Daley’, exploring Nicholas’ Jamaican-Scottish heritage and his collaborations with Scottish heritage brands. The Fife Arms Cultural Programme Curator, Lorraine Grant will join Araminta and Mhairi to discuss the pivotal role of Scottish textiles in the fashion world.

Taking its name from the River Clunie, which runs past the hotel, The Clunie Dining Room showcases wood-fire cooking and seasonal Scottish produce in a striking room painted by artist, Guillermo Kuitca. Join for dinner on Friday or Saturday night, or our popular Highland Feast on Sunday.
The Drawing Room
Bringing together art and history, The Drawing Room walls are covered in The Fife Arms tartan designed by Araminta Campbell, and the immersive ceiling was commissioned from renowned Chinese artist, Zhang Enli. Afternoon Tea is served daily and includes a delicious array of sandwiches, scones and pâtisseries.
