Inspired by a traditional Scottish croft house, our cosiest rooms feature a charming, traditional cabin bed that’s spacious for one or snug for two. Each bed has been hand-painted by artists with some featuring scenes of the surrounding Scottish landscape, which these rooms overlook. Room sizes are approximate. Working with Scottish poet and artist Alec Finlay, our Croft Rooms are inspired by the myths and mountains in the Scottish highlands.
Nan Shepherd called the Cairngorms by their simplest title: The Mountain. This room is dedicated to the mountains as a natural phenomenon of great age, force and stark beauty. Locally they say everything comes back to the mountains and 'Monadh', meaning 'upland', was a common way of referring to the entire Highland region. Image credit: Hannah Devereux
One of the key myths for the entire hotel is the heroic mountaineer, and many guests will be in Braemar to go hiking and climbing. These old heroes include many writer-climbers, most famously, W H Murray and Janet Adam Smith, from Aberdeen, who wrote Mountain Holidays, and did lots of exploration in the Cairngorms. An acknowledgement of all the hill farmers and peasant farmers who endured hard lives, and gave so much character to the region. You need only look at the place-names to see how hard it was to farm these glens: 'Peatiebogs', 'Fernyhillocks' and 'Scrapehard'. Image credit: Hannah Devereux
These two themes refer to the folk myths of the region, some of which are not well known. Fingalian myths of hunting, Ossian, wild boar, the tale of Diarmaid and Grainne, and the ancient Gaelic Hunting Ballads of the Fiann, many of which were imagined as happening in Glenshee.
Representative of the important relic Caledonian pinewoods in the region. These woods were part of the Great Caledonian Pinewood, which is dominated by the Scots pine, a slow growing tree, which allows a generous under-storey and makes a wonderful walking experience.
