Renowned British journalist, bestselling author, political insider and presenter of the chart-topping podcast The News Agents, Jon Sopel joins us in Braemar to discuss his new book Strangeland, which chronicles his experience of returning to the UK after eight years of political reporting in the US, and the changed homeland he encountered.

Jon will examine the political upheavals, societal and cultural shifts that have changed our country, and explore the key question of what it now means to be British in a rapidly changing, politically-charged world, and how his own experiences of working at the highest level of political journalism have changed him.

Jon Sopel is a bestselling author, political insider and presenter of the chart-topping podcast The News Agents. After eight years of political reporting in the US, Jon Sopel moved home to the UK returning to find a very different country to the one he left. In his very first book since launching his global hit podcast, Strangeland is an examination of the new post-Brexit Britain with fresh eyes, from a native who’s been out but come back. With his characteristic wit and clarity, Jon unpicks the politics, policy, and people that have shaped and shaken Britain, analysing the changes that have rendered his homeland almost unrecognisable from the country he once knew.

Host Biography

Sally Magnusson has forged a highly distinguished career as a broadcast journalist, television presenter and as a writer. Her written works include the Sunday Times bestseller Where Memories Go (2014), and her debut novel, The Sealwoman’s Gift (2018), about the experience of a 17th century Icelandic woman abducted into slavery. Sally’s fourth novel, set in Orkney and based on Norse mythology, is due out in 2025.
